At the end of 2015 I had the privilege of creating a 3D object browser for the MCA’s first major survey exhibition, Grayson Perry - My Pretty Little Art Career. The MCA engaged Snepo Research to create an interactive experience that would showcase selected works from the internationally renowned artist and Turner Prize recipient, Grayson Perry. This experience was the signature educational component of the exhibition’s resource room and was designed to bring patrons closer to the artist's works through hands on interaction.
The 3D object browser focussed on three key pieces of work, Grayson Perry’s 2004 piece “Precious Boys”, his 2005 piece “In Praise of Shadows” and his 2007 piece “Personal Creation Myth”. Each piece was able to be rotated 360 degrees, zoomed in on and had highlightable ares which, when tapped, allowed users to listen to the artist describe the piece.
The major challenge of this project was that there was no existing source material. Each object had to modelled from scratch, using high quality photos as references. Additionally the texture on each 3D object has to be painstakingly stitched together from photos using various editing tools. The texture alone on each vase took approximately 20 hours to complete.
The final interface was designed and created by myself and a developer using Unity 3D.
