‘The Becalmed Heart’ is a large-scale installation by artists Brianna Mannish, Robert Jordan and Clare McCracken, presented at Underbelly Arts Festival in 2015.
Snepo was asked to work with the artists to create a virtual reality companion piece which was displayed alongside the installation at Cockatoo Island during the festival.
Working with the artists to help realise their vision while exploiting the technology to its full effect was a challenging and rewarding enterprise. Working primarily after hours on this pro bono project, I created the 3D Models, textures and lighting in Blender. Then exported them across to Unity 3D to construct a scene. Working with a developer, we were able to add dynamically moving elements to the scene as well as set up a rails system, which allowed the user to navigate through the landscape without additional input.
The final piece was deployed to an oculus rift headset. The experience allowed users to float upward from the bottom of the ocean through abstract trash particles, eventually emerging from the water to view and unending sea of garbage.
